january 10 1997 - day fifteen - london, england

and then there were four.
brian left this morning to head back to school to finish a paper. it was a blast travelling with him.

last night, since we got in so late, we stayed at a hostel that i like to call, "the hole." because that's what it was. it was the only place with room and it was pretty cheap, so we did it. the beds were uncomfortable, the floor popped and creaked and there was a guy in our room who snored...a lot. it had a very pot-induced sense of restlessness that i just did not want to be around. so first thing this morning, we headed to a hotel for some quiet and security. we found one. it's not bad. better anyway.

first thing after we settled into the hotel, we were off to liecester square to get tickets for a show. dave and sara and i decided to see 'martin guerre.' we got the tickets and then headed to westminster abbey and big ben. westminster is one of my favorite places. it's better than i remember it. and this time there was no scaffolding. speaking of which, there are a ton of construction sites in this town. cranes all over the skyline. just an observation.

we went back to liecester to get some food. what else, but kfc...home of the zinger. a sandwich that never made it to the states. it was great of course. we walked, then, to picadilly circus and to trafalgar square where we shopped and took some pictures.
after a while, we went to find shakespeare's globe theatre on the thames. we found it, but it's not done yet. we went in anyway, to see if there was anything to see. just construction, so we left.
lunch
geoff and i decided to go over to st. paul's cathedral. it was amazing of course. just a beautiful, beautiful place. we met back up with dave and sara and had dinner at a place called grafunkels. after dinner, geoff went back to the hotel and we saw our show. it was very, very good. our seats were first row, right behind the conductor. i mean i could have (and wanted to) flick him in the ear. i picked up the cd for a terribly inflated price, but what's money at this point?
so, after a quick desert, we came back to the hotel. today was not necessarily exciting, just packed. like most of the trip, i guess. today, i realized that i love this city. if only there were a few less punks out after dark.
