january 08 1997 - day thirteen - heidlburg, germany it's just before 10. we're on a train to heidlburg, and i am not going to neuschwannstein. i decided against it. probably not smart to split up at this point. i'll be back to see it someday. i wanted to write about last night, because hofbrauhaus was great. it's a genuinely happy, happy place. there was a polka band and bierfraus and everything. we went with some people we met at the hostel. houston and steph, again, plus a guy named joshua from detroit, and the 'laser-funk chicken,' some punk from l.a. we had a good time. a couple of people got a little loaded, so we spent the rest of the night getting frustrated and trying to get everyone home. well, anyway, it was a lot of fun and i managed to come out with a beer stein for a friend who wanted one. more about heidlburg tonight. |

| +++++ january 08 (continued) heidlburg was not bad. the castle they have is pretty cool and the shops were neat. it's a college town, so it was pretty laid back and young, considering the age of the city. we ate at a quaint little place and saw the biggest wine cask ever, i think. once again, our train doesn't leave until after midnight, so we stayed in the restaurant for close to 3 hours. the train station here is better than the one in venice. we had a bar to sit at for a while with hot chocolate. well, we'll be in london tomorrow. the last leg of our tour. |
