january 05 1997 - day ten - salzburg, austria

today began very early. we bought our breakfast and headed into the center of town. the first thing we came across was an incredible little cemetary in the side of a cliff. this cemetary is the one from the end of 'the sound of music.' this is 'sound of music' country. there's the bus tour, the walking tour, the mountains, even our hostel plays the frickin' movie every day at 1. anyway, the cemetary was beautiful. the snow made it even more so. there are several churches around it at the base of the mountains; all but one of which was bombed out in the war (wwII). there are catacombs and other attractions, but they were all closed. so we headed up the mountain on a cable car to the fortress on top. of course, it was also bombed. (salzburg seemed to have it pretty rough during the war.) they have rebuilt everything with a modern architecture. it's a very interesting contrast between old and new in every building.

old vs new architecture

from the fortress, we saw everything, the entire city. but, of course, it was cloudy and we couldn't see too far. great views overall, but i think the thing that made this city great was the people in the hostel. once again, we turned in early, but not before brian and i went into a little cafe where a really cute girl was working. we sat for a while. turns out she's married..."so she's a frau? brian said. "who cares?"

well, we went back to yoho and ate dinner. while i was waiting for my 'spag,' i met tyler, the jewelry guy. he's from the states, but he's been living in europe for over 2 years traveling around and making necklaces out of just about everything; mostly coins. he had coins from every country in the world, it seemed. his collection made me very jealous. after about 45 minutes of thinking about it and talking travel and money with tyler, i gave in and borrowed some cash from geoff to buy one. it's a british sixpence. a great choice, i think.
for the rest of the night, we hung out and talked to more people. it was an all around good time. salzburg is a nice place, but apart from the hostel and the cemetary area, i wasn't super impressed. it is nice and i got to rest, which i will need when we head into germany tomorrow.

ps.. we ran into wardlaw today. right there on the street in town. i guess he is teaching at a christian school in romania. he's doing well. it was just weird. you never expect to see someone you know, but you always think you might. i haven't seen him since high school and now...in salzburg, austria!! who knew?
